I am well aware of the old 14 character limit for a newsgroup name
component.  I think news server software has advanced sufficiently so
that a component of more than 14 characters (as long as it's not
abusively long) would not cause a problem.  You can use Klaas's
propagation search engine ( http://usenet.klaas.ca/groupsearch/ ) if
you doubt me.
