Just seen The Matrix Revolutions. Was okay, preferred Reloaded. Anyhoo... I think I've figured out what the trilogy is all about. I think it's all about 'purpose'. I think Neo had to accept defeat at the hands of Agent Smith, and by doing so he freed Zion. Neo became Smith - therefore making Smith's purpose in the net redundant. With Neo beaten, Smith has no purpose, so was deleted. The architect appreciated Neo's sacrifice and spared those humans who has rebelled against the Matrix programme in the first place. Had Neo continued to fight Smith, Smith would continue to have a purpose - the circle never unbroken. Ultimately, the film ends on a depressing note. Zion may be free, but the rest of humanity is enslaved with the Matrix. You could say the Matrix is a metaphor for the tyranny of the human condition. We are all slaves to the cycle of birth, life and death. The best we can do is create some kind of purpose out of a condition that is essentially purposeless. scojo
