Re: How much research do you do?

I'm currently reading up the whole post colonial history of Uganda for about a couple of lines in my book. Great.

What's the most research you've done, and how much was you research : actual usage ratio?

I'm not doing that level of research for a fiction book that doesn't purport to be a major Alt History wankfest. I do that for my day job -- technical proposal writing. And I suspect a lot of THAT is wasted time, too.

If a fact is a critical/important plot point I'll make sure I have the correct information on it. If I don't know, then I'll find someone who does know. If it's a point in dispute, I'll either find a concensus, or choose an authority whose opinion most closely backs my story needs.

F'rinstance, in _Digital Knight_ I had Verne Domingo have a number of undiscovered Egyptian works of art in his collection; I did some checking around to verify that certain well-known Pharaohs did not, in fact, have their stuff known to have been catalogued anywhere.
