The victorious army stood in the field of sunflowers. They had slain
every last of the opposing soldiers, except for their leader. The slain
would know their defeat for an eternity. While being slain, the
victorious army tortured them mercilessly. The slain cried out "Please,
show us mercy, we beg you. We are truly sorry." The victorious general
laughed, and said "I will make sure you are sorry. I will show you
cruelty which you have never seen." One by one, the soldiers were
tortured. They started with the foot warriors and as they went up through
the ranks they inflicted unimaginable suffering on the warriors. The
defeated general heard their cries. He started to weep for the fallen
soldiers. He was sad that he had led them to such a fate.
The victorious general picked up the bound and broken general. "I
have taken your men, I have made them wish for death to end their
suffering, I have broken them and bound them forever, just as I've broken
and bound you." Then the defeated general was afraid. He trembled as the
victorious general held him in the air. A Woman's voice rang out. "Stop
this! You must stop this! You have defeated him. You have broken his
bones. You have broken his spirt. You have achieved your victory, and
many have suffered and died because of you." The victorious general slain
the woman and said "I will have his soul forever." He killed the defeted
general and left the field.
At this, the sunflowers started weeping. Shedding seeds like teardrops
for all time. One day, the lord walked through the field and saw the
sunflowers weeping. "Why are you weeping? Why are you so sad?" The
sunflowers answered "We are sad for we have seen cruelty beyond
imagination. We are sad because we have seen a woman silenced for
speaking out against this cruelty. We are sad because there can be no
peace here now. Look at our field. Once our sun was beautiful, but now
it's a light that shows the bodies of the fallen. Once we had fresh water
but now we can taste blood when we drink it. Once the air was pure but
now carries the stench of the fallen."
"We could not stop them. We are only sunflowers. We cannot stop their
swords for they are sharp and would cut our leaves. We can not chase
them, for we are rooted to the ground and would die from hunger and
thirst. We could not stop them, but we will remember. We will remember
forever. We will weep for them."
At this The Lord said, "I will weep with you, then, in the hopes that
you will not feel so burdened by these affairs of men." He wept with the
sunflowers for he was truly saddened by their tale of woe. "I will avenge
the fallen. I will take up their sword and their shield and fight in
their stead and I will be victorious."
The Lord took up the fallen sword and shield and with his army fought the
cruel victorious general. "I will inflict pain and suffering on you as
you have shown to others. I will hear your screams. I will watch you beg
for mercy. And you will suffer through all eternity!" The Lord smote the
victorious general and the victorious general suffered for all eternity.
The Lord went back to the sunflowers. "I have found the ones
responsible for this. I have inflicted a punishment on them and the dead
can rest in peace. They have been avenged."
But the sunflowers were not consoled for they had seen cruelty beyond
all imagination. Their land held no peace, and the sunflowers still weep.
