can it be done with books only?

Hello:

  As a new folder I am quite successful with the basic models but seem to
come to a grinding halt with models from "Peter Engels book "From angelfish
to Zen". Is it possible to advance in paper folding with one dimensional
diagrams? So many seem to leave out crucial steps and or have very poorly
angled views of folds. I'm trying to find "Modern Origami" hoping that will
help.
