I second the nominations of Denise Mina, Ruth Rendell, and Fidelis Morgan -- all great writing combined with marvelous, three-dimensional characters and absorbing plots. (Fidelis especially writes "read in one sitting" books.) And my #1 pick is Jane Haddam. The "sleuth of record," Gregor Demarkian, is not female, but you'll love the character of Bennis Hannaford.
