Really, Greg?  I've never heard of a washing machine dying young.  You must
have had a lemon.  I've had mine for 17 years and it's still running.

That's the key, I think. I have an old, old Maytag that's still going strong. My fancy-schmancy Neptune was badly engineered and required a rebuild, done by Maytag at their expense even after the warrantee had expired. New appliances have a life expectancy of 10 to 20 years, depending on the appliance. Older appliances were built to last. Houses are much the same. If you look at current building techniques, versus old timey ones, you can see that there is a substantial difference in craftsmanship and quality. Cars, on the other hand, used to be built to last three years. Now, they last and last for many more.
