I don't think they're that annoying; I think they're just as annoying as
reel change cue marks (which we all like). And they get noticed by just
the same number of people, like myself and a handful of other nerds. But
they're useless, no question.

That said, I think a cut-out frame (is it really just one frame? I'd have
guessed three) with its associated sound and image jump is fare more
annoying than what could be a few specks of dirt.
