The US courts will soon declare that male connectors must
mate with each other (and equal rights for female-female
couplings, of course). Isn't that already the law in Canada
and the more "progressive" parts of Europe?   :-)

Of course those old Hi-Z mic connectors (the ones with a
5/8"-27 ring and a big blob of solder in the middle) were
hermaphrodidic long before it was popular.
