metering Group: rec.arts.movies.production.sound Date: Tue, Dec 2, 2003, 12:24pm (EST-3) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (John Flenniken) Hi- I just finished a doc mix on the online NLE (DS), and the only meters available were Dorrough 40-A2s. I let the loudest syllables of the interviews hit zero (persistence.) While laying off to tape, I watched the VU meters in the engineering dept's McCurdy test set, and was troubled to see those hot spots hitting +3, though the music portions tracked identically to the Dorroughs. Question is, do I need to get some traditional meters, or is the VU reading not an issue? Will a QC engineer at ABC raise an eyebrow, or will he think, "they must have mixed with Dorroughs" and let it go? Regarding peaks, the Dorroughs show some +11s, which should be -9dBFS, but I haven't watched the Digibeta meters all the way through yet. Thanks, John F. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Peak reading meters will read about 6 db hotter than traditional vu meters on modulation. I would use peak meters for watching levels. Network broadcast standards are -20dbfs reference tone with nothing higher than -10dbfs. A good limiter/compressor can be your best friend. Eric
