I still don't get why it is an important statistic? Important for whom?

Everyone who intends to make money from a movie, specifically the distributor and the theatre owner. Consider the cost of running a movie in single theatre and you would follow the rest.

If a theatre owner/distributor in ND sees the screen average of this movie, which is
contributed mainly from NJ/NY threatres (where dumb NRIs flock to see SRK
movies) and releases the movie there, you would know how much money he would make.
So, the screen average for an Indian movie in US is a useless statistic. It basically shows
lot of NRIs in pockets of major metros like NYC see the movie at any cost.
