Baghban strikes a superhit
-----------------------------------

Written off before release, Ravi Chopra's Baghban has managed to and
continues to
shock the industry, putting together a run over the last 2 months
associated
with the biggest of blockbusters. In an industry known for promoting
and relying on youth,
this film showcasing a now 61 year old Amitabh Bachchan and 55 year
old Hema Malini
as its lead pair has become a flat out superhit all over the world.

The film, sold for Rs 1.25 cr/per territory in Bombay and Delhi-UP,
has recovered
more than double its entire territory cost from Bombay city (Rs. 2.66
cr) and Delhi
city (Rs. 2.70 cr) alone. It has recovered more than twice the
distribution
cost nearly everywhere and is still going great guns in its 2nd month.

The collections have either held steady or gone up every week since
mid-october,
which typically does not happen with high profile releases in the age
of satellite tv
and video piracy. The film's week 3, week 4, week 5 and week 6
collections
have been consistently remarkable, and in fact in several centers
continue shooting up.
The collections are so impressive that Baghban's now starting to
outpace even
blockbusters. For instance Baghban collected Rs. 37 lakhs in Delhi in
week 6, putting
even the likes of Koi Mil Gaya (Rs. 34 lakhs), Kuch Kuch Hota hai (Rs.
33 lakhs),
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Rs. 28 lakhs), and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
(Rs. 7 lakhs)
in the shade. In many of the country's villages and smaller centers
like Jamnagar,
Baghban has set a number of collection records through its run.

The 12 crore film at this point has already done around Rs. 20 crores
of
net business in India. Over 10 crores gross admissions have checked in
from the
overseas market. It has just completed 7th weekend overseas in UK
ending Nov 16 with collections
of $54k, registering virtually no drop from its 6th weekend ($56k)
there. As of this writing,
Baghban's international gross stands at $1.2 million in UK, $1.1
million in US, and around
1.4 million Rands in South Africa.
