Dhoop

Starring - Om Puri, Revathi, Sanjay Suri
 At - PVRs
 Rated - A must-go

There have been several meaningless discussions over the
years about meaningful cinema. But Dhoop, beyond doubt,
can go down as one of the few real ones. A simple and
doggedly told true story of a Kargil parents' struggle
against a corrupt system, and the nation's collective
desensitisation to a martyr, Dhoop is a yelling movie
against corruption.

But what it says in few measured words is far more potent
than, say an Ardh Satya or the more recently released
Gangajal. Unlike Prakash Jha, Dhoop's director decided to
just show without drama what happened to a father and
mother after they lost their son to the nation. Nowhere
does Dhoop scream, but the haunting sadness it leaves on
your soul is something that has been accomplished with a
genuine effort rare to hysterical histrionics Bollywood
generally lays its bets on.

But coming to the genre of meaningful cinema, Dhoop shows
that whoever straight talks to move your conscience is
worthy of this prestigious tag. There are no heroes here
who pump muscle, there are no bullish winners, but one
Prof Nayyar to do the honours at an uncomfortable 50
plus, that too when his reason to live had been snatched
away. "I have given my son to the nation, what more do
you want," he asks a corrupt babu demanding money to
forward his file. "Rashtra ko diya so diya, par hamein
kya diya?" is the retort. These simple, and mind you
true, dialogues jolt you out of the complacency to
corruption that has come over the generation.

Dhoop is one film that everyone needs to see and imbibe
from. And that will be the only tribute Prof Nayyar
should get from a nation that needs to make amends.
