Hello, Several people have compiled lists of the "greatest movies". Most of these lists quietly define greatness in terms of entertainment or in sales. How about a list of the greatest movies, in terms of significance? Yeah, yeah, significance is hard to define. But so is entertainment. People have made lists of Great Books. Why not The Great Movies? Maybe such lists are already out there. If so, can someone please point me to some relevant websites? I am neither a historian nor a movie expert. But I will make a few contributions to start this list. * A propaganda movie, such as Germany made c. 1940 and the USA made in the 1950's. * A documentary, such as a Jacques Cousteau made-for-TV show. * And of course include some entertainment. * That entertainment should include some lesser-known works . . . * . . . And some famous stuff, of course; maybe The Wizard of Oz. * The first movie ever made, whatever that may be * The most widely seen movie, whatever that may be * A newsreel. Any newsreel. Suggestions? (Please respond to this discussion group, not to my email.) Thank you very much, Ted Shoemaker I keep saying I'm going to make a signature line about irony, but I haven't done that yet.
