It's a loss-leader -- the store's willing to lose money on the DVD
player because the deal will get customers into the store where they'll
hopefully buy enough other items to cover the loss. ("Well, the DVD
player only costs $29. We might as well get Jimmy a couple DVDs to go
with it.")
Plus, if you look at the fine print in the ad, chances are it'll say
something along the lines of "Limited time only. No rain-checks." The
store probably has three of the $29 ones, and once they're gone ...
well, the customer's in the store, so he might as well buy *something*.
