Except by 1986, we'd already had Empire Strikes Back and Superman II, both of
which were thought to have been better than the movies they were continuing
(Superman II hasn't aged as well as the first one though).  The much-maligned
Temple of Doom was also well-received.

My sense is that a preference for Alien or Aliens may be more of a generational
thing than anything else.  I was in high school when Alien was released and it
blew us all away.  But I never thought of Aliens as much more than an
above-average science fiction action movie.  The last two blew.  But if you
were watching Alien in a theater back in 1979 and had no idea what was going to
happen next, it was an amazing experience.
