The much-maligned Temple of Doom was also well-received. My sense is that a preference for Alien or Aliens may be more of a generational thing than anything else. I was in high school when Alien was released and it blew us all away. But I never thought of Aliens as much more than an above-average science fiction action movie. The last two blew. But if you were watching Alien in a theater back in 1979 and had no idea what was going to happen next, it was an amazing experience.
