Re: Socialist Horror(or comedy?)?

Typical horrors - no. It would be too self-indulgent, and serve no social purpose ;) The few exceptions were based on works of literature - the already mentioned "Vij", also "Day of Wrath" (a sci-fi story): http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0167115/

Did Soviet Union produce any decent slapstick comedies? Or
sophisticated comedies? Or was that considered too frivolous and
capitalist?

They had some great comedies, actually. Personal favorites:

"Operation Y and Other Shurik's Adventures"

"Kidnapping Caucasian Style"

"Kin-Dza-Dza"

In Bulgaria, we had some pretty decent comedies too, although they tended to be more of the bitter-sweet type, or alternatively, self satirizing (making fun of Bulgarian habits and ways). Some worth mentioning (although very little info online):
"Ladies Choice" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0169731/
"The Double" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0322110/
"Favourite #13" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0279208/
"Jack-of-All-Trades" http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0279435/
