Introduction and Notes
Comic book heroes have always had a particular draw for movie studios
and television networks. To them a comic book property is a
recognisable brandname with a proven fan base and an established
background. So in theory they get free advertising, a known audience
and at least a series bible - of course it doesn't always work out
that way. The drawbacks to comic related properties can be lack of
respect for the source material (Superman VI), lack of budget
(Superman VI) and letting the A-list star dictate the direction of the
character (Superman VI). Nevertheless film and television shows based
on licenced characters remain a popular, if quirky, sub-genera.
This document is an attempt to catalogue the 90+ adaptations of
properties licenced from what is now DC Comics (including the material
once owned by Quality Comics and Chartlon Comics). From Bud Collyer's
first radio portrayal of Superman to Tom Wellings current stint as
Clark Kent this hopes to be a list of what characters have appeared
where and who they were played by. This includes live action
appearances (film, TV, stage) and voice only appearances (radio,
animation, webtoons) of characters originally seen in the comics. One
or two anomalies are allowed - Captain Midnight didn't originate in
comics, but was in there spirit and Chief O'Hara is probably better
known to non-comics readers that most of the characters on this list.
