I think they were trying to imply that the Slayers were manifestations of the First Slayer in the way the various Prometheas are manifestations of the true Promethea. Of course, when they came back to the concept in the last season, they did something completely different. The weird dream stuff in that ep reminded me of David Lynch more than Promethea, though.
