We have 2 sections of Oddhobby, that really should be not-for-profit groups. (Geek Floyd, and the FOO fan club) We looked into it and found that the main difference between a corporation and a not-for-profit is paying taxes. So, here's my question: why are people willing to do volunteer work for a company with a rich CEO who pays *no* taxes (because he's listed as a not-for-profit) rather than to volunteer for a small corporation, doing a good thing, with a CEO who makes almost nothing, and does pay taxes? The CEO of GoodWill makes $500,000 per year. It just seemed odd to me, when they asked me to look into helping our fans start a fan club and I learned that there's nothing really "holy" about a non-for-profit group! Now, in the case of Good Will, they do, do good things. But not all not-for-profit groups are charities. Last year we gave away $500 in candy and made zero profits--so, it's not what you do that makes you a non-profit group! But hey, if it makes people feel better to know that we're not paying taxes, far be it from me to argue. It's an awful lot of paperwork, just to get out of paying taxes. Has anyone here done it? Started a fan club etc.? When was the last time you volunteered for something?
