If the US were to withdraw its bases from Europe, European countries would hardly need additional protection from anyone, since there isn't any concievable threat to them whatsoever. Due to commercial and political integration provided by the framework of the EU, the chance of intra-Europe (intra-EU) conflicts is also nil. I think the major party that doesn't "get it" is the American electorate. -JJ
