While the Silmarils do hold a central place, in reality it is several related stories. However, I do think at least some of the stories might be amenable to filming. I think the Turin saga and Beren and Luthien would both make excellent movies. I also wouldn't mind seeing the Darkening of Valinor (one of my personal favorites in Silm). Skip ahead to the Akkabeleth, and the tale of Ar-Pharazon's rise to power, humiliation of Sauron, and eventual attack on Valinor would be a pretty awesome film, and might fit very well into a prequel of the Lord of the Rings films. You could end it with Elendil surviving the Downfall, founding the Numenorean kingdoms in exile, and the Last Alliance. I've thought, over the years, that the Ainulindale might be filmable as an animated musical film. You could have sort of a dueling symphonies sort of thing with the Ainur like vast rows of singers in a choir. Of course, it wouldn't be a very commercial thing to do. Maybe even just a symphony based upon the Ainulindale would be pretty phenomonal. I think that the good Professor might have liked something like that. -- Aaron Clausen tao_of_cow/\alberni.net (replace /\ with @)
