And let's face it, people, some of those studio executives were not
only unfamiliar with the books, they were downright Not Getting It.
Treebeard was too slow and boring. They wanted less Gollum because
he was hard to understand. They had to take out a shot of shot of
Minas Tirith in the background of Osgiliath because some executives
thought it was Helm's Deep. They had to put in the map scene because
they couldn't figure out where the different plot lines were
happening in relation to each other.
And if the movie executives were confused, it's pretty much
guaranteed that a certain percentage of the non-book-reading but
movie-watching audience would be, too.
