The EE is a nice expansion, and we do get a scene telling us that Aragorn has been running around the world in different guises, fighting battles -- not languishing slacker-like in Rivendell as some have claimed. We're also told his age. :) The only commentary track I've gotten through so far is the director/writer one, and Peter, Phillipa, and Fran actually discuss every one of the major plot change criticisms for the film. Phillipa is the most defensive; Fran the most conciliatory. Fran actually says more than once that they had started in one direction, and thought about changing it later, but were so far into filming that it was no longer feasible, so they had to try to push it back closer to the books with pick-ups, and sometimes they were more successful than other. Phillipa brings up the point that the book at this point has little to no "reversals" of character, which are often important to movies, which is why many of the plot changes. The Elves at Helm's Deep are both to slow the Elvish participation in the war elsewhere, and because one of Phillipa's favorite scenes in the book was Elrond sending his sons to Aragorn, and it was a way for her to put it in without having to establish that Elrond has sons back in the first movie, etc. Whether or not you'll accept any explanations for the changes, the discussions about their reasons are quite interesting, if only Phillipa would quit saying, "SLIGHT deviation! SLIGHT deviation!" She started sound a tad hysterical.
