My suspicion would be that it is related to the Vedic 'asura' and Avestan 
'ahura', meaning 'being of power'.  

I wonder if the Etruscan 'aisar' ("gods", in the plural) was related.  
Does anyone know if Etruscan is thought to have been Indo-European?
