I think it more likely speaks to the fact that it'd be difficult for him to
add such action quotient to this "first half".

What is the half-way point you are talking about?

Gandalf fighting the Balrog.
Sam and Frodo fighting Gollum.
Eomer's riders fighting the Uruk-hai
Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn using kung-fu to fight Grima's thugs. :-)
