It's my belief that "freight train" is an archaic Numenorean term for
exploding monstrosity that somehow lingered in Westron until the modern
"freight train" was invented, whereupon the ancient term was resurrected and
applied to it.

This is not a unique example of this phenomenon, an ancient no-longer-used
term applied to some brand new unrelated thing. "Holocaust" comes to mind.
