The larger part of this book is by G. de Bertier de Sauvigny and grew out of
a course on the history of France that he offered at the American College in
Paris from 1970 to 1976. It was devoted largely to political history and
personalities. The director of the Forum Press had David Pinkney add more
social, economic, and cultural history. It is illustrated with genealogies
and a few maps.
