People magazine declared that "[Nora Roberts] is at the top of her game,"
and there's no greater evidence of that than these three novels. From the
horse farms of Virginia to the rugged beauty of Montana to an island off the
coast of Georgia, these novels showcase Nora Roberts's talents for intense
drama, vivid characters, and fast-paced suspense.

True Betrayals
The world of championship thoroughbred racing is the milieu for Roberts'
(Born in Fire) latest, a fast-paced, engaging tale of envy, greed and
romance. Kelsey Byden, 26, is in the throes of divorcing her unfaithful
husband when she suffers a second shock. It is a letter from her mother,
whom she has long presumed dead. Her father, it turns out, has been lying to
her-at her mother's request, since Naomi Chadwick was in prison for murder
during many of those years. Kelsey travels to Virginia to meet her long-lost
parent at her horse farm. As mother and daughter get to know each other,
Kelsey falls in love with horses, racing and the gambler next door. Gabe
Slater is handsome, virile and unlike anyone the spoiled young woman has
ever met. Their attraction is instant and explosive, but their romance
triggers a chain of events that includes murder and sabotage, prompting the
lovers to risk their lives as they race to clear Naomi's name and to deal
with old enemies and betrayals that threaten their future. Roberts paints
her story with a broad brush, but its colorful canvas, easily identifiable
heroes and villains and swirling action add up to another winner for this
popular author.

Montana Sky
Having published 100 novels in 15 years, Roberts (True Betrayals) just keeps
getting better. In life, Jack Mercy, owner of the 25,000-acre Mercy Ranch,
garnered more enemies than friends. His death promises to do the same, since
his will forces his three grown daughters, half-sisters and virtual
strangers to one another, to live together at the Montana ranch for a year
or forfeit his estate, worth up to $20 million. If any die during the year,
the survivor(s) will inherit the fortune, assuming they last the 12 months.
Giving it a go are bossy Willa, part Blackfoot Indian, the only sister who
lived on the ranch and is capable of running it; Tess, a sassy Hollywood
scriptwriter who wants money but balks at a family reunion; and meek,
divorced Lily, grateful for refuge. As the siblings settle in, someone
begins committing barbaric acts against animals and then humans: Are these
the random crimes of a psychopath? Or are they a devious distraction in a
sinister game plan? Roberts balances the tension and sometimes gruesome
action with three romances, crackling dialogue and a snappy infusion of
humor. Setting her rich narrative against majestic scenery integral to the
plot, she again demonstrates why, in 1986, she was the first author inducted
into the Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame.

Sanctuary
Following the success of Montana Sky , Roberts bases another story on the
three siblings in that novel: Jo Ellen, Brian, and Lexy Hathaway of
Sanctuary Inn, a B & B on Lost Desert Island, off the coast of Savannah,
Georgia. Jo Ellen is a successful photographer who collapses under the
mental anguish of seeing a picture in which her mother is young, beautiful,
naked, and unmistakably dead. Her mother disappeared 20 years before,
shattering a close-knit family. When the photo disappears while Jo Ellen is
in the hospital, she returns to Sanctuary to recover her sanity and mend her
relationships with Brian, the chef for the inn, and Lexy, an aspiring
actress. The arrival of Nathan Delaney, whose family stayed on the island
the summer her mother disappeared, further complicates Jo Ellen's life.
Nathan wants Jo Ellen, but he is tormented by a secret that has lured a
killer to Sanctuary and to Jo Ellen. Putnam has planned national publicity,
including television ads; Sanctuary is also a Literary Guild and Doubleday
Book Club main selection. Roberts has produced an engrossing novel to thrill
her fans. Highly recommended.
