In an earlier reply Neville mentioned, but did not comment upon,
_Count Belisarius_ by Robert Graves.

Graves was a remarkable writer, best known for _I Claudius_
which, with its sequel became a 15 part BBC series. I particularly
like Graves not only for his literary competence, but also for his
fine human sensibilities and his real mastery of the history and
culture of the period of which he wrote.

I thought Belisarius was not quite as excellent as Claudius, but
still very, very good.

The novel is better characterized as Mediterranean than Western
European, so it might not be what you're looking for. But it's worth
a read.
