You might want to look at Alfred Duggan's books. They're out of print
now but might be available at libraries or through used bookstores.
Also, I believe his works are being reprinted in the UK.

He wrote a lot of books about ancient/medieval times. One that fits
your criteria is I think called something like "The Right Line of
Cerdic," about the founder of the Kingdom of Wessex. Another book of
Duggan's close to what you are looking for was "The Little Emperors,"
about Roman commanders of the garrison in Britain abandoning the
island to try to gain the imperial purple.

My guess there are other Duggan books that will meet your needs. He
was an excelllent, erudite author.
