While on the subject of historical novels and how one determines whether or not a book is one, how do you define whether a novel is historical fiction or merely contemporary? A recent letter suggested that if the era described was before the birth of the author, it was historical; otherwise, contemporary. In my callow youth, I seem to recall that anything written of an era, at least 75 years earlier than when being read, constituted a historical novel. For many of us, this would make novels of WWII, historical. I'm curious as to your reaction.
