My 7-year-old loved Harry Potter (he read all but the latest one
several times), but hated Redwall (never got more than halfway through
one), and I haven't been able to convince him to start Tamora Pierce
yet (I recently read the Protector of the Small series, and I think
he'll love them). He started 20000 Leagues Under the Sea after seeing
the movie, but gave up after about 1/3 of the book---he found it too
slow-moving compared to the film.
