For great stories about families in the past, try: All of A Kind Family series (my highest recommendation - I think it fits all your criteria, and she'd enjoy the look at a different culture/time) Strawberry Girl (and other books by Lois Lenski, like Prarie School) Betsy-Tacy (I haven't read, but have heard all good things about these books) For mysteries: Trixie Belden mysteries (like Nancy Drew for younger readers) Encyclopedia Brown (if she likes puzzles) Other great stories I loved at that age: Pippi Longstocking E.B. White stories (Charlotte's Web, Trumpet of the Swan, Stewart Little) The Mouse and the Motorcycle A Wrinkle in Time Chronicles of Narnia Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (and other Roald Dahl) The Secret Garden Beverly Cleary books (Ramona, etc. Are these too easy?) - Lynn
