> The Black and Red Stallions series Just as point of note, the second series by Walter Farley of "Black Stallion" fame is about Flame, the *Island* Stallion. ;-) Couple other points on those: A, the heroes are teenage boys, which didn't bother me but is a turnoff for some girls; B, the Island Stallion series takes an odd turn into science fiction. If she *does* like adventure stories that involve teenage boys/young men and animals, she'd enjoy the works of Jim Kjelgaard, though they're not as easy to find in libraries as they used to be. > And The Secret Pencil. Um... I remember a book called "The Silver Pencil". Other books- I think somebody's already recommended the Betsy-Tacy series. That series starts on a fairly reading simple level, being about two young girls, and gets a bit more complex as it follows their lives. Great series, lots of fun. The Moffat books by Elanor Estes are good family stories, as are the works of Noel Streatfield.
