I asked my 7-year-old son for recommendations, and we came up with the
following list from his recent readings:
        Nancy Drew
        Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events
        Emily Rodda's "Rowan" series 
        Phantom Tollbooth
        Boxcar Children
