Some of my favourite books were:
Anne of Green Gables
The Black and Red Stallions series
Black Beauty (I had a thing for horses)
Treasure Island
Kidnapped (ditto for adventure)
etc.

I love historical stuff, too. Witch of Blackbird Pond, Johnny Tremaine, 
Castle of Fear. And mysteries. And The Secret Pencil.
