Ah, "Space Cat." Yes, that's what I thought of when I read the initial inquiry. The cat is named Flyball (!) and I still remember how the book ends. Pretty sappy and stupid but I found it quite moving at the time. "The moon is just a start," says Flyball the flier; "We'll reach the stars yet, going higher and higher. We'll voyage right 'round space to the ends of the sky; Oh, noone can ever guess how far we will fly." It seems to me IIRC that quite a bit of the story is told from Flyball's point of view. I think I also remember that he wrote a number of nonfiction science books for children. Abebooks, click, click... oh, my goodness, either he was quite the polymath or there's more than one person by that name. -- dpbsmith at world dot std dot com (replace "at" with at-sign and "dot" with period and remove spaces)
