Re: Q flat or round shader

I am new to this group so please forgive me if this question has been
asked before but i was wondering if anyone could tell me tell me the
difference of shading/coloring with a flat needle configuration as
opposed to a round shader. Is this just an artist preference or is there
any major difference.

I guess the easiest way to eaxplain the difference to a non artist is a round shades more like a pencil and a flat shades more like a brush. A third configuration that is used is the Magnum which is like a flat with offset needles. This shape when used competently and properly can both achieve very soft brush like shading and heavy coverage better in my opinion than either of the 2 other options.

I have had many tattoos done with both needle
types and i noticed that the flat seems to hold color better on myself..
I am getting sick of going back for touch ups so i was wondering if it's
the artist who sucks or the needle configuration. Any advice would be
very much appreciated.

From what I have seen Artists with a lesser level of experiance will opt for rounds for most if not all of thier work. With a round it does not cut when moved carelessly sideways across the skin like a flat or mag can. I would guess this is an indicator of the skill of the artist. Either needle is capable of doing quality work in the hands of a competent artist and both have their place in the trade. But personally I would be wary of an artist who uses nothing but rounds. <these are general statements and should be taken as such yes I know there are very good artists out there that only use rounds but IMNSHO they are in the minority>
