Actually, comparing Friends to Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien would be valid.
There are three things that advertisers look for in the ratings. "Ratings",
"Share", and "Timeslot". (I may have the first two backwards but, the
concepts are the same.) Ratings is the percentage of people who "could be"
watching who are actually watching it. The "could be" include people who are
asleep, eating, working, in the classroom, et cetra, who could be watching
if they weren't doing something else. (In this category, Conan is hurt by
the number of people who are asleep when he is on and by the number of
people who simply watch the encore airings on cable the next day.) Share is
the percentage of people who are actually watching TV at the moment, who are
watching that show as well. Timeslot is ratings/share for a 15 minute block
of time, comparing every show on at the same time. (This one is responsible
for schedule moving.) Ultimately, advertisers care most how a show rates
among a specific desirable sub-group, primarily men 12-34, followed by women
12-34, who are the two sub-groups perceived (stereotyped) to be the most
likely spend money on luxuries, toys, clothes, and/or 'coolness'. So, the
most important ratings for Pokémon would be 12-24, the ones most likely to
buy the plushies, the trading card games, and the video games.
So, the above, assuming it is ratings (how many people in all of Japan who
are actually watching it), shows that Conan is the King of anime, and
Pokémon is another legendary anime. I do note that Hamutaro is also a major
powerhouse anime but, apparently between 26 week seasons, and therefore
absent from the current ratings. (Looking at the covers of magazines
directed at young, elementary school kids, you currently see Pokémon,
Hamutaro, Sailor Moon, and Mini Moni on the covers.)
D-Chance does have a point that it can be a little hard comparing the
morning shows to the evening shows, and especially the "new" late night
ecchi shows. The late night shows probably won't show up in the 24/7 weekly
ratings, having so many people asleep while they are on, although, it would
be interesting to know which is the king of late anime. On the other hand,
most anime is shown between 6-8 pm, although there are 7-10 am Sunday
morning block and a few shoujo anime on Saturday mornings, plus the few late
night ecchi shows but, still 70-80% of anime is shown 6-8 pm so, most of the
ratings are on equal ground.
One, also, must note that these ratings do not reflect what happened in the
prior three quarters ("13 week seasons") this year so, it's impossible to
truly rate the most watched anime (plural) of the year from this one week
sample.
