Actually, you have to consider what this story is all about: it's basically the moving on with life. Accepting the future and finding new happiness. Once you understand that basic theme everything falls neatly into place with this series. The hero is Mitsuki, the long-suffering female lead who has been pushing courageously forward into the future and trying to find new happiness. The villan is Haruka, the implacable denial of the future and barrier against the flow of time for these three people. If we look at the pacing of the series (and this episode was too slow I agree) we realize that about two-thirds of the way through is a good time for the villan to be dominant, setting up for the climatic battle to conclude the conflict. And we can see that Takayuki is on his knees before the enemy, weakened. We see him running away from his life with Mitsuki (the future) and surrendering to his desire to "go back" with Haruka (denial of the future). But Haruka has realized that her hair is long. And she's going to realize the book is three years older than it should be -- why else do you think the oldness of the book was dwelled upon to such a degree? Haruka will lose her perfect defense against the future, and she will be faced with having to accept it -- and she won't because she is the champion of the past. She'll become desperate in her attempt to deny the future and roll back the clock. This will be the final, climatic battle of the series. And if everthing goes according to formula, she'll realize that the forces of nature cannot be denied (in good Asian metaphysical fasion) and she will eventually embrace her future, and we will likely see the default good ending in the game (Mitsuki's true ending).
