Hey, everybody!
A friend of mine recently discovered Gundam (I haven't seen Gundam. I don't know which one, assuming there's more than one series, I just know it's not SD). For Christmas, I'd like to get him a Gundam game. So I looked into what's available.
Holy white tornado!
So I turn to you guys--which one do I get? Which one is the best, which is the worst, which is the most intriguing, follows the story, etc.? He has a PS2, so the game can be the one for the PS1 or the PS2 without any hassle.
Gameplay-wise, Federation vs. Zeon is pretty good, if a bit thin on the complexity at first glance. I really like it. Like all the other PS2 Gundam games (the localized ones, that is), it's a 3D action game.
Zeonic Front and Journey to Jaburo are two sides of the same coin; apparently they have more 'strategic' campaign modes with a bit more story to them. The gameplay is said to be less satisfying.
Encounters in Space got a bad review, but I can't really comment on it. It's new though, and features units from Gundam Wing (which could be either a plus or a minus depending on your friend's taste).
On the PS1 front, the good games are mostly the fighting ones, Gundam Battle Assault and (predictably) Gundam Battle Assault 2. Story-wise the first one, at least, is kind of mixed up, although the gameplay is pretty good. The second one is supposedly better, but I haven't had a chance to play it. It's a crossover between 3 of the Gundam universes, so it probably has the broadest appeal. However, if your friend doesn't really like beat-em-up games, you want to steer clear of these.
Finally, if your friend likes other mecha anime and you can get an import, there's always the 1,001 different versions of Super Robot Wars.
