I like them as long as you can either take them or leave them.  FFIX (and 
the Breath of Fire series) had the right idea, AFAIC...there's a mini-
game, and you can waste time on it if you want (and get some neat stuff), 
but you can also completely ignore it throughout the whole game is you 
want.  So only people who really like the game (or who are supar-
completists) have to waste time on it.
