Of course, I tend to
think more like a novelist than a game designer, but I would make it so
there were ways to (and benefits for) defeating the boss without leveling
up. But maybe I just haven't developed a gamer's mind yet.
You're not alone. This is a common opinion among most console RPG
aficionados. For alternatives to this, you could search out Chrono Cross
(only boss battles increase your entire party's level) or the much-maligned
FF8 (where levels are utterly redundant, a relic for players who think they
need to be "level 99" to be at maximum power.)

Absolutely. I have no problem with people who say they hated FFVIII because of the characters. I liked most of them (well, to put things differently, I didn't _dis_like them as much as I disliked, say, Tifa) but I'm open to other opinions. However, when people complain about the level-pro-rating system, I can't help but roll my eyes and go "Oh, you poor thing, you've been deprived of the wonderful experience of killing the same grunt enemy AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN."
