Full Metal Panic! (first series).
I like that track, in fact I liked it so much I downloaded the mp3, big
spender that I am...
The new FMP/fumoffu OP (Sore Ga, Ai Deshou) is also very pleasant,
thought the full version has a weird stop-start style like they just
glued several short versions together or something.
Re. Thesis of a Cruel Angel, it's great as an OP but as a standalone
track I feel it's let down by the cheesy synthesiser sound that makes me
think of sequinned musicians in 1970's night clubs.
Other OP's I really like include the Escaflowne OP, though the full
version has an incongruous bit of Scottish marching band music stuck in
the middle, but then that's Yoko Kanno for you I guess. (Her integration
of Irish music into Hack//Sign was rather more successful.)
Then there's Haibane Renmei's "Freebird" (not exactly Lynyrd Skynyrd but
good in its own way),
.hack//Sign's "Obsession",
Azumanga Daioh's "Soramimi Cake",
Excel Saga's ... what's that song called? I can't remember;
Fruit Basket's "For Fruits",
they all have great OPs, but all different styles.
Closing themes tend to be more poignant, one of my favourites is
Yawara's: "Stand by me" sung by Rika Himenogi (and no it's not the same
song as the well-known western song of the same name).
The Crest of the Stars ED (Lost Blue Sky) is also very poignant,
as is Full Metal Panic's "Karenai Hana" (Everlasting Flower)
while Haibane Renmei's "Blue Flow" and To Heart's "Yell" are more
soothing.
Then there's some great upbeat EDs like "Yasashii Yoake" (.Hack//Sign),
and the first ED for Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, "Haruka" by Pierrot which
is probably the high point of the whole show and has a similar power to
Chabo's ED for Lain, "Tooi Sakebi" (Distant Cry).
