I teach attention to audience and emphasize it with everything I do in
class. If colloquialisms and improper syntax are appropriate to your
audience, then they're fine. If they're not appropriate to your audience, if
your audience will lose respect for you if you use them, then you need to
adjust your discourse to the appropriate level. And really, all that
Catherine has been asking for is audience awareness, awareness that not
everybody on this list is a member of the same gender, age group,
nationality, and sexual orientation. However much a poster may wish to claim
that "well, I'm only writing to people on the group who are like me," the
rest of us are still here and still members of the audience. It's impossible
to restrict our audience members to only one group of people, no matter what
kind of communication we do.
