Here's some 411 on the Tenchi spinoffs:

1) "Mihoshi Special" -- this is a 1-episode OAV which many consider to
be the testing groungs for the "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" OAV series
as well as the "Tenchi Universe" series.  It is funny, but just light
fluff and not canon to the TM!R continuity.

2) "Tenchi Universe" -- this is the TV series which took TM!R OAV 1
(episodes 1-6) and spread them into 26-episodes.  The characters are
shallow and the story is as well, plus GP Officer Kiyone is included
here.  It is funnier than TM!R which is the reason I like and own the
series.

3) "Magical Girl Pretty Sammy" -- this is a 3-episode OAV series
spoofing the mahou shoujo genre.  Episode 2 is pretty funny since
Microsoft gets made fun of.

4) "Magical Project S" -- this is the TV remake of the MGPS OAV's. 
There are many changes from the OAV regarding characters.

5) "Tenchi in Tokyo" -- this is the 3rd Tenchi TV series and is the
worst of the lot.  The characters again get remakes and drop some
serious IQ points.  Plus, Yugi is just plain AWFUL!  On the positive
side, Tenchi and Ryoko go out on an actual date.  The series had
potential, it was just very poorly written.

6) "Tenchi Muyo! Galaxy Police Transporter" (aka: "Tenchi Muyo! GXP")
-- This is the SEQUEL TV series to "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki" and is
canon material to that universe.  It takes place ~ a year after TM!R
OAV 3 (which is currently being released in Japan).  However, Tenchi
and company only have cameos in this one (especially in episode 17) as
this series stars a new Tenchi-clone named Siena, who lives in the
same area as Tenchi.

There are also three Tenchi movies too.
