Thoughts on SM Season 1

In a fit of insanity I picked up the DVD box set of the first season
of Sailor Moon and have found it to be a surprisingly good show. I've
just finished episode 24(yay, off week before finals!)(poor
Naru-chan!) and am eagerly looking forward to the rest. The show got
off to a bit of a slow start at first, but after Ami shows up things
become much more interesting.

Unfortunately, the audio quality is abysmal(I hear ADV was forced to
use a low-quality master). This isn't a show stopper for me, as
Usagi's voice is high-pitched(and loud) enough to get past the
muddiness of the sound.

But BOO to ADV for putting episode titles on the back of the boxes!
While this sounds like a good idea, it is apparent that Japanese
audiences don't care about spoilers in their titles at all. I took one
look at the back of the second sub-box and had the end of the
Naru/Nephrite spoiled for me.

Aside from those small flaws, this is an incredible deal. $98 for 46
episodes is as good as anyone could reasonably ask for. I wish more
boxes would come out at that price!

Random thoughts while watching:

Wow, Jadeite is the most creative person in the entire universe. I
wonder if he's the real power behind the throne?
*squelch*
Guess not.

(After six episodes of Usagi crying)
Did the person who wrote the American version of the opening song
*ever* actually watch the show?

Poor Luna.

Only Tuxedo Mask could make walking off of a battlefield look cool.

Rei is *fucking awesome*.

Nephrite's car gives me Utena flashbacks! And "Sanjoin" sure looks a
lot like "Saionji"...

Mamoru's not really gonna go out with the jailbait, is he?
Hmm...guess he is.

These Dark Kingdom people sure are jerks. Then again, if my entire
universe consisted of a hideous hollowed-out skull, I'd probably be a
jerk too.


Looking forward to the second half!
