He probably was.  The new edition uses Shunsuke Kikuichi's classic
renditions, but the opening/closing themes are rather adaptations of the
originals produceed by FUNi for the purpose, which I enjoy listening to
(there's only been a few countries that sometiems use the original
themes they try to adapt lyrics to as well if you ever find MP3s out
there).

Also Dragon Ball Z was probably a year or so into it's broadcasting in
Japan when HG got Dragon Ball and there probably would've have been
enough episodes to use or not enough interest yet to trust the series.
We could've had DBZ much earlier this way if it was possible to have the
show run as early as '92 perhaps.
