It depends on so many things - the writers, the voice actrs, the
artists, the audience.

I often prefer manga to anime for several reasons: 1) It takes me
longer to get through, because I'm buying the manga in Japanese. What
would take me five minutes to read in English, takes me five days in
Japanese....I get more bang for my buck; 2)Very often anime series
shorten the story - or drag it out - or change it - or rewrite the
characters, etc, etc. If a story was originally manga, the original
story may well have more complex and sometimes less censored
relationships than the anime. Not always, but often.

The key thing I like about anime is the voices. I like to see the
characters I love come to life and speak. I don't care much about the
art - but I'm *really* picky about story. So, very often the anime is
disappointing to me, because it isn't resolved in a meaningful way.
The most depressing thing is when an anime for a manga is only two or
three episodes. "Hana no Asuka-gumi" ran to 37 volumes of manga, but
only got four episodes total of anime. :-(

But that's just *me*! Plenty of people prefer anime over manga...and
with certain series, so do I. :-)

Cheers,

Erica
